Description
Built in 1836-1841 as a "Special Purpose House" for the engineering and general staff, this house later became a place where military rigor and human destinies coexisted: since 1844, a garrison guardhouse had been operating in the southern part of the basement. Today, the memory of two eras lives within these walls. The museum opened on March 9, 1989, to mark Taras Shevchenko's 175th birthday, and its appearance was made possible thanks to the efforts of Orenburg local historian L. N. Bolshakov. The exhibition follows two poignant themes: it tells about the years of Taras Shevchenko's exile in the Orenburg Region, about how the poet and artist continued to create despite the prohibitions, and about the tragic pages of the country's history, about the period of political repression in the 1920s and 1950s. A walk through the halls is not just a window inspection, but a conversation about perseverance, art and memory, which remains in the heart for a long time.
