Description
Krasnaya Gora in the village of Saraktash is one of the most striking sights of the Orenburg region: towering on the right bank of the Sakmara River, it impresses with an unusual reddish hue — it appears due to the red clay and sandstone composing the mountain, the rock looks especially impressive in dry weather. The mountain also has a second name, Saryktash, which translates as "stone sheep" or "sheep stone".: It is associated with large stones on the slopes, which, according to legend, could be mistaken for a flock of sheep from afar. From the top there is a picturesque view of the surroundings, the village of Saraktash itself and the Sakmara winding at the foot.
The decorations of the life-size Russian fortress give the place a special historical and cultural value.: They were built for filming in 1998 of the Russian‑French historical melodrama "The Russian Revolt" based on the works of Alexander Pushkin "The Captain's Daughter" and "The Story of the Pugachev Rebellion".
Today, the Landscape and Ethnographic Museum of the Orenburg Cossacks, an open‑air museum reserve, operates on the basis of these decorations, where event events are regularly held. No less interesting is the village of Saraktash itself, the regional center on the left bank of the Sakmara: founded in 1913 in connection with the construction of the Orenburg —Orsk railway, it preserves its special history and organically complements the flavor of this tourist corner of Orenburg region.
