Description

On September 13, 1886, Orenburg merchant Fyodor Petrovich Degtyarev applied to the Orenburg City Council with an application for the construction of a church in the name of St. Dmitry of Solun with the capital left by his late brother Dmitry according to his spiritual will, and a request to allocate an area in the second part of the city for construction. In 1887, the church in honor of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica was founded. And on September 30 (according to the Old Calendar), 1890, it was consecrated.

On August 1, 1899, the (right) altar was consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity.

On August 13 (according to the Old Calendar), the (left) chapel was consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God.

In the 1920s, the church was handed over to the Renovationists. Despite this circumstance, in the 1930s Dmitrievskaya Church was actually used by two communities: the Old Church and the Renovationist. In 1933, the church was closed. Two years later, in 1935, the church was reopened due to the closure of the Kazan Cathedral and the relocation of the episcopal see. At that time, St. Dmitrievskaya Church was the only functioning church in the entire city. Orthodox parishioners, believers of the Moscow Patriarchate, could only pray in the left aisle. In others, Renovationists gathered.

On September 17, 1938, the church was closed. In January 1939, it was transferred to the Children's Commission for the club, and then to the Regional Film Trust. During the Great Patriotic War, an automobile company of the South Ural District was located on the territory of the temple. In 1944, the believers tried to return the temple, but their petitions were rejected.

In Soviet times, the "Burevestnik" cinema was located in the building of the Dimitrievsky Temple.

On February 12, 1990, according to the decision of the Orenburg City Executive Committee, the building of the former Dmitrievsky temple was again transferred to the faithful of the Orthodox Church. Work began on the restoration of the church, and services began to be held there again. Then the central chapel was rededicated in honor of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica. By 1999, a five-domed dome and roof were erected over the church, later the construction of the bell tower was completed, for the opening of which a moleben was served by Metropolitan Valentin of Orenburg and Buzuluk on August 16, 1999.

On October 21, 2016, by the decision of the Holy Synod, the Dimitrievsky Monastery was opened.

On June 10, 2018, the central aisle of the church in honor of Demetrius of Thessalonica was rededicated (in connection with the renovation of the altar).

On December 23, 2018, the (left) chapel in honor of the Holy Trinity was consecrated.
