In 1920, our city became the administrative center of the newly established Kyrgyz Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic (now the Republic of Kazakhstan).

The history of the city is full of surprises, the events of the Pugachev rebellion unfolded in these parts, the multinational Orenburg Cossack army lived.

Karamzin, animator Harry Bardin, geologist Yevgraf Fedorov, creator of fables I. A. Krylov, lexicographer Vladimir Dahl, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, prominent Communist Party figure Georgy Malenkov, former Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and others.
