Description
The route follows the picturesque low-mountain steppe ranges of the South Ural folded zone. This is the geological boundary between the East European Platform and the mountainous Urals, i.e. the so-called "beginning" of the Ural Mountains.
All seven peaks are part of the meridional Karamurun-Tau ridge, which passes south into the Nogai or Long Mountains tract. They were formed as a result of the "sawing" of this ridge by tributary streams of the Bolshoy Ika, then the Sakmara and the Urals along tectonic faults.
The ridge is a standard of a mountain-folded landscape with typical representatives of species of herbaceous mountain plants: gornokolosnik, large-flowered kopechnik, onosma protozoa, thyme of the province. The slopes of the limestone ridges are covered with cushions of Cossack juniper and rare dogwood bushes. The bottom of the beams is covered with a dense forest of black alder, oak, rough elm, bird cherry.
The goal of the "Steppe Wolf" project is to climb the seven peaks of the steppe Urals:
The first peak is Chasnaya Mountain (382.9 m)
It is one of the five peaks of the low-mountain range known as the "Andreevsky Cones" natural monument of regional significance. From this mountain there is a beautiful view of the winding Uskalyk river, the village of Andreevka and St. Andrew's Monastery.
For a novice traveler, climbing Chasnaya Mountain will be comfortable and impressive. The traveler's trail, created by local residents, is equipped with recreation areas. There is a chapel at the top, and at the northern foot of the mountain there is a powerful spring decorated with a wild stone and an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
The village of Andreevka was founded in the second half of the XVIII century. The traditions of the ancestors are still preserved and revered here. The estate of the Lunin family, the founders of "Andreevskoe Podvorye" company, is engaged in the development of rural tourism. """"Steppenwolf"" contest participants can come for a few days, plunge into the life of rural residents, visit the "organic" farms of the Andreyevskoye Podvorye company, taste dishes made according to grandmother's recipes. And also to admire the most beautiful landscapes of the Ural hills.
The full house "Steppenwolf" is installed on the southern slope of Chasnaya.
From Orenburg to Andreevka village – 130 km.
The village of Andreevka is a very convenient location for passing the Chasnaya Mountain – Malinovaya Mountain (4.6 km) - Alyan Mountain (9 km) section of the route.

The second peak is Mount Malinovaya (428 m)
The next pearl of the route is located in the territory of the Zianchurinsky district of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Mount Malinovaya is a hilly flat-topped massif. Its remoteness from populated areas creates a special atmosphere here – untrodden trails, preserved standard carpet, rocky, shrubby, meadow steppes. Here you can find numerous rare plant species: Korzhinsky's cowtail, low iris, drooping tulip, Bieberstein's tulip, Russian grouse, etc.
From the top of the mountain there is an amazing panorama of hills and valleys. The streams flowing into the Assel River and Bolshoy Ik originate here.
The full house "Steppenwolf" is installed at the geodetic sign.
From S.Andreevka, you can move along the western slope of the Karamuruntau ridge. The crossing of the streams separating the Provalnaya and Maryevka mountains is convenient. The slopes of Mount Malinovaya are overgrown. The full house is installed next to the geodetic sign.
The third peak is Mount Alyan (361 m)
The "Mountain Alyan" tract, located above the left bank of the Assel River, is a picturesque mountain-steppe natural ensemble. There are several small caves near the top of the mountain, and a well—equipped spring at the foot. The mountain has long been shrouded in legends, some of which are described by local residents and presented to travelers at an information full house near one of the caves.
Not far from the mountain are the villages of Yuldybaevo and Abzanovo. To the southwest, almost at the foot of the mountain, is the "Alyan-Kul" tourist recreation center. Tourists are offered wooden houses, a tent area, a gazebo, and barbecues. Nearby there is a pond on the Yuldybai river, where you can spend time fishing with a fishing rod.
Mount Alyan is a natural monument of regional importance in the Republic of Bashkortostan.
The mountain is inaccessible from the northern slope: a high cliff and a very steep climb. But the main obstacle is the Assel River, which is full in spring. In summer, you can cross the river through a ford (it is clearly visible from the beaver jams). The nearest road bridge is in the village of Yuldybaevo. In this case, you will have to drive or walk an additional 9 km to the village and return to Mount Alyan.
The fourth peak is Mount Karattau (314.8 m)
The most mysterious mountain of the route. It is located near the Sultanbaevo farm in Saraktash district. From the Fakan tract, the orography shows a second ridge parallel to the main one with an average elevation of 300-315 m, stretching to the valley of the Kasmark River. The famous Karattau Peak is located here. On its steep, southern slopes, a stony steppe is represented: pale yellow stars of hybrid scallop, lush pink cushions of various types of thyme, fleshy balls and rosettes of thorny mountain thorn. Often, the limestone outcrops are covered with pale green or bluish curtains of Cossack juniper, strewn with cones and berries.
It's good in these mountains in spring: you can enjoy the smell of steppe grasses for an endless time!
The fifth peak is Mount Kilkan (342 m)
The Kilkan tract (or Yaman Gorge) is an ornament of the Karamurun ridge.
Here, the ridge is cut by the mountain gulch of the Kilkan (or Yaman) stream and forms a picturesque mountain gorge. Travelers can admire the white limestone cliffs covered with lichens and juniper cushions, and a beautiful stream flowing through a narrow canyon with steep rocky slopes. There are ripples and waterfalls, crevices and caves. A fox, a badger, and a steppe pipit live in the tract, and a colony of marmots lives on the steppe slopes between the gorges.
6 km north of the peak there is a White spring, equipped by local residents. There is a chapel dedicated to the icon of the Tabyn Mother of God.
The sixth peak is Nos Gora (385 m)
Nos Gora is located on the right bank of the river.Sakmara. This is one of the picturesque landscape and geological sites of Karamurun-tau. The mountain is a geological stratotype, that is, there are reference rock outcrops (sections), which are used to study the geological features of the area. Literally under your feet you can find the fossilized fauna of the Permian period - small shells of mollusks, the remains of marine animals – colonies of bryozoans and sea lilies.
The nose mountain has a ridge-shaped shape and is elongated in a north-northwesterly direction for 4 km. Along with the geological section on the site, karst manifestations in the form of well-shaped sinkholes on the slopes of the mountain and a rounded lake basin at the foot of the mountain - Chertovo Lake are of interest.
From the top of the mountain there is a beautiful view of the river valley.Sakmara, a valley cut by hills and mountains.
The seventh peak is Mount Camel (Dyuya-Tash) (329.4 m)
Our route includes this mountain range, bordered by the rivers Elshanka and
Ural, is an iconic landscape landmark: This is the southernmost point.
