Zaboy Lake is man–made. 7 km southwest of the city of Novotroitsk on the outskirts of the village of Akkermanovka, it appeared in the second half of the 20th century. In the early 1930s, a deposit of nickel ores was discovered here, which were formed during the Carboniferous period (about 300 million years ago). It was decided to build and develop a quarry. Mining was carried out manually. The ore was first delivered to the plant in carts, then by trolleys on a narrow-gauge railway. Mining of only nickel-rich areas led to the fact that the quarry soon turned into a gorge. It was closed in 1958. According to one version, the gorge was filled with groundwater, according to another, it was artificially flooded. This is how Lake Zaboy was formed. The total area is 60 hectares. The depth is up to 45 m. It is said that in the dashing 90s, bandits on the shore of the lake often tried their opponents. It was easy to hide the traces of crimes in the deep water.
